Bali Tips – Nusa Lembongan

An Aussie takes her Austrian abroad….

A glimpse of our getaway….

Hi! I'm Carly, an Aussie who's been living in Vienna since 2012. I'm a coffee snob and brunch fiend figuring out the practical side of slow travel & living in Austria.
Here's where I share stories & tips about life in Vienna, loving an Austrian and the mishaps and advice I've discovered in 10 years of travel & misadventures.
This blog's for other folks who want to make the most of their time in Austria and never waste brunch in a bad cafe. Coming with us?

Instagram post 2194937539222197786_175319621 Small but mighty xmas market alert! Just down the cobbled street from Hofburg Palace, the Spanish Riding School has setup a mini markt in the stables this of the Lipizzaner horses 😍🐴 It’s majestic and a little bit different so pop by on your wanders through the sparkling 1st district ✨
Instagram post 2192758765722499997_175319621 Vienna sparkles at Christmas time 🎄 Today is St Nikolaus, where good kids get gifted nuts, fruit and chocolate, but bad kids get STUFFED IN A COAL SACK and kidnapped by a devil. Because Austrian Christmas traditions do not f*ck around 😈 I’d love to hear some of your guys’ most interesting Christmas traditions stories!
Instagram post 2191567157766425956_175319621 Christmas market treat of choice this week? Bauernkrapfen 🤤 Dough, hand rolled, deep fried and smeared with home made plum jam is exactly as delicious and comforting as it sounds 🍩 My fave is at @weihnachtsmarktamspittelberg you can see the stall if ya swipe 😊 What’s your indulgence snack of choice at the Christmas markets? .

December is bonkers for shopping, parties and stress, so amongst all the madnesss I’m officially giving you permission to s-l-o-w-d-o-w-n. Whether that’s just savouring your cup of tea quietly, or strolling the sparkling city with friends on a quiet Sunday, take the time, now, while you have it to enjoy.

After a burnout and career change over the last year, I’m learning the value of savouring those small moments more than ever, but it’s an endless battle to resist being ‘productive’ constantly. To retrain my brain that output doesn’t = success. For 2020, I want to savour the small, the sweet, the things with substance that matter to me - and forget shiny ‘success’ by anyone else’s measure.
So - for me that’s slow living. Slow travel. Breathing in deep. And enjoying these sparkling moments❤️ Would love to know what you want to savour this season?
Instagram post 2184378710991782675_175319621 If you need me I’ll be right here, doing this for the next 3-4 weeks straight 😆🎄 It’s CHRISTMAS MARKET TIME YEEOOOWW but don’t be fooled, not all markets are created equal, so here’s some tips for enjoying Xmas markets the sustainable way:
.
✅ Support the smaller, local markets alongside the big hitters, your local punsch stand is probably just as festive as the overcrowded Rathaus
.
✅ DO make sure the stall you’re buying from is a local artist or the products are at the very least made in Europe so you can #supportlocal
(My faves are at @artadvent_karlsplatz or check out @snowflakeswear at Spittelberg!😍)
.
✅ Dispose of your paper plates, wooden cutlery and napkins responsibly, there are hundreds of people moving through these markets in Vienna .
✅ Embrace the festive spirit - from December onwards most Viennese will be enjoying an after work glüwein or punsch daily so remeber its not just a tourist playground and respect the locals too
.
The article currently linked in my bio has allllll the details on which local markets to hit up this year. I’m calling it now - Christmas season has officially arrived! 🙌🏻 🎄🤶

This last week at the Women in Travel Summit and across social media I’ve been seeing and thinking a lot about leaning into your community, running your own race, diversity an representation in travel and what’s interesting to all of us now here on Instagram. Because it sure as shit aint girls in ballgowns in Cappadocia for me. What’s resonating right now for me are people with substance, purpose and more beyond the surface in their creativity. As we’re coming into the final countdown to the end of year I’m working to bring more of that to what I do - go deeper, be more opinionated and ignore trends to do my own thing. I’d love to know how you guys are finding and experiencing Instagram and what you prefer to see these days?
